What is a vulnerability assessment?

A vulnerability assessment is the process of identifying weaknesses and vulnerabilities in computer systems, networks and software, along with the inherent risks they pose. This helps organisations to understand where they might be at risk and to prioritise remediation efforts.

Vulnerability assessments are typically conducted using a combination of automated and manual techniques. Automated tools, such as vulnerability scanners, can be used to identify common vulnerabilities in large systems and networks. Manual assessments can be used to identify more complex or nuanced vulnerabilities, such as those that are specific to an organisation's unique environment.

The results of a vulnerability assessment are typically documented in a report that includes a list of all identified vulnerabilities, along with their severity level and recommendations for remediation. This report can be used to inform organisations' risk management and security decision-making processes.
